IoT ENABLED SMART SWITCH WITH PROTECTIVE FUNCTIONS

Abstract

Switching and standby losses in traditional switches account for nearly 25% of a consumers’ electricity bill. Advancements in automation has made it possible to control devices using smartphones or web apps. However, the existing smart switches are expensive, require hubs for their working and are not compatible with all electrical loads. A technique for remote controlling of power to any household device using power electronics and micro-controllers has been proposed in this paper. The switchboard of any device can be replaced to make it accessible via a smartphone or web app. The proposed switch has protective functions to prevent damage to devices from surges. The proposed switch can be interfaced with smart meters for monitoring and control of all loads to reduce standby losses and give more accurate reading of power consumption.
